Short circuiting your outboard will blow the main fuses and possibly damaging the one way diode preventing the outboard from starting and continuing to blow fuses when attempting to start.

This is a replacement diode for when the situation of connecting the battery in reverse polarity or when the power supply suffers from a short circuit has occured.
